About Charis
Charis is a psychology group practice specialising mainly in the medical and physical rehabilitation context. We strive to contribute psychological knowledge and skills to individuals with disabilities and chronic health conditions in order to maximize health and welfare, independence and choice, and social role participation across their lifespan.
Our patients are seen on an inpatient and an outpatient basis at various sub-acute and physical rehabilitation hospitals. The outpatient department of the practice also caters for therapy with children, adults, older adults, couples and families with a variety of emotional difficulties. Charis also engages with the broader medical system by offering staff wellness programmes, debriefing sessions and group therapy to a variety of professions.
We offer numerous programs and continuous professional development initiatives to ensure high ethical and professional services. In our corporate services department, we offer a variety of services for individuals and groups in organisations. We also pride ourselves in having an HPCSA accredited 1-year internship program for counselling psychologists.
Our Story
Charis (“kha-ris”) is derived from a Greek word meaning “grace, kindness, and life” – and that portrays the story of Charis.
In 2011 Estie’s life drastically changed when she was diagnosed with a spinal cord tumour. The tumour and the operation affected her health and mobility significantly as she had to spend weeks in a physical rehabilitation hospital learning to adapt to her new reality. As the trauma she endured was on a physical and an emotional level, she was inspired to launch Charis Psychological Services. Our focus is to provide psychological services for people when faced with a life-altering medical condition. Realising that there is meaning in suffering, underpins our value of supporting others in similar circumstances.
For a while, she journeyed alone until Charis was joined by Dr Danie Breedt as a business partner and co-owner. Nearly a decade later, the practice has grown to 16 psychologists spread across South Africa in several hospitals. Charis Psychological Services is however not limited to South Africa, we also have an international footprint, offering online therapy and training across the world. In 2020 we introduced an internship programme that has been running successfully since. Charis Psychological Services continues to expand and grow, reaching more people in need of such services.
